At a Glance: Crown brodiaea is a perennial herb growing 6–20 inches (15–50 cm) tall. It features striking, deep bluish-purple to violet flowers with a crown-like center structure, blooming in late spring to early summer. The plant grows from a corm and typically appears after leaves have withered.
Leaves: The basal leaves are narrow, linear, and grass-like, usually one to two per plant. They typically dry out before flowering occurs.
Flowers: The showy, tubular to bell-shaped flowers are deep blue to violet with six spreading lobes and three prominent, petal-like staminodes forming a crown-like structure at the flower’s center. Flowers are borne in a loose cluster (umbel) on a tall, leafless stalk.
