At a Glance: Fireweed is a tall willowy perennial borne from shallow rhizomatous roots. The often purplish stems are 1-6’ tall, leafy and unbranched. It proliferates in disturbed areas, especially recently burned sites.

Leaves: Leaves are alternate, lance-shaped, stalkless, 2-8” long, green & often short-hairy above, paler, hairless & distinctly veined below, smooth margined.

Flowers: Rose to purple, large (.75-1.5” across), 4 sepals, 4 petals, 4 lobed stigma; several to many in long cluster atop stem.
