At a Glance: Trailing evergreen shrub with ascending tips usually not over 8” tall, often forming mats with long, flexible rooting branches. Kinnikinnick, also commonly known as Uva-Ursi or Bearberry likes sandy and well drained exposed sites, dry rocky slopes, dry forest and clearings and is common and widespread.
Leaves: The small, leathery, oval to spoon-shaped leaves are alternate, and grow to just over 1” long. They are dark-green and somewhat shiny above, paler beneath.
Flowers: Several small pinkish-white urn-shaped, drooping flowers form in few-flowered terminal clusters.
Fruit: Bright-red mealy berries, 7-10mm wide, ripen late and stay on plants into the winter.
