Description
Bundle of 10
At a Glance: Oceanspray is a large, erect deciduous shrub, with several main arching stems. It likes open sites, clearings, logged areas, coastal bluffs, thickets and ravine edges.
Also known as ‘Ironwood’ because of the hardness and strength of its wood. Made even harder by heating it over a fire, it has historically been used to make diggings sticks, spear, arrow and harpoon shafts, bows, and nails.
Leaves: Its deciduous leaves are alternate, dull green, hairy, broadly egg-shaped to triangular. Lobed or coarsely toothed, they get a reddish tinge in autumn.
Flowers: Small white to cream flowers form lilac-like clusters in a dense terminal pyramid 4-7” long. Flower clusters turn brown and remain on plants over winter.
