At a Glance: Osoberry, also known as Indian Plum, is a deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 16’ tall. One of the first plants to flower in the spring, it is common in the open woods, streambanks and open areas like roadsides.

Leaves: Leaves are alternate, pale-green, broadly lance-shaped, not toothed and have a strong cucumber-like smell when crushed.

Flowers: Male and female flowers occur on separate plants. They have 5 petals and 15 stamens in 3 distinct series somewhat bell-shaped, and greenish-white. Loose clusters hang from leaf axils.

Fruit: Fruit starts peach-colored, ripening to bluish-black with a whitish bloom, resembling small plums.
