At a Glance: A small-to-medium-sized deciduous tree up to 30m tall with white to copper-brown, lenticellate bark peeling in papery strips. Common in mixed second-growth forest at low elevations, can be confused with bitter and choke cherry; use leaves to distinguish.
Leaves: Alternatve, deciduous, oval to round, sharp-pointed, sometimes very shallowly lobed, dull green above, paler and hairy below, margins doubly toothed.
Flowers: Male and female flowers in separate catkins 2-4 cm long, flower before or during leaf emergence, catkins break up at maturity.
Fruit: Nutlets with wings broader than body.
