At a Glance: Red Elderberry is a deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 20’ tall. It has soft pithy twigs, dark reddish-brown, warty bark and its foliage has a strong characteristic odor.
Leaves: Leaves are opposite, large, divided into 5-7 leaflets. Leaflets are lance-shaped, 2-6” long, pointed, sharply toothed and often somewhat hairy beneath.
Flowers: White to creamy, small flowers with a strong unpleasant odor are numerous in a rounded or pyramidal parasol-like cluster.
Fruit: Bright red berry-like drupes, each with 3-5 smooth seeds.
