Salal is a hardy, evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Northwest, known for its leathery, dark green leaves, urn-shaped pink to white flowers, and edible dark blue berries that are important for wildlife.

Description

Bundle of 5 plugs

At a Glance: Creeping to erect evergreen shrub that spreads by layering, suckering and spouting. Height is quite variable and can grow up to 15’ tall. It is among the most common forest understory shrubs in our region and can form an almost continuous shrub layer in many drier coniferous forests and can grow equally well in some wet or boggy coniferous forests.

Leaves: Alternate, leathery, thick, shiny, egg-shaped sharply and finely toothed.

Flowers: Small white to pinkish urn-shaped flowers are  arranged 5-15 at branch ends. Flower stalks bend so that flowers are all oriented in one direction.

Fruit: Reddish-blue to dark-purple ‘berries’ that are actually fleshy sepals, about ¼” broad.
