At a Glance: Often forming tall, dense stands that are an important part of prime waterfowl habitat in wet meadows & streamside areas; stems are reddish brown at base with conspicuous old leaves. 15-60” tall.

Leaves: flat w/margins rolled under and 3-10mm wide.

Flowers: erect or drooping on slender stalks; Inflorescence: long, cylindrical spikes; 1-4 erect, male, terminal spikes, lower 3-5 spikes female or w/male flowers at top.
