At a Glance: Sitka Spruce is a large evergreen tree that likes well-drained sites such as alluvial floodplains, marine terraces, headlands, recent glacial outwash, and avalanche tracks. Commonly growing to 230’ the main branches are typically long and horizontal, branchlets drooping, and bark is thin reddish brown to grey brown breaking up into small scales.
Leaves: Needles are yellow-green or blue-green, stiff and very sharp. They are 4-sided and somewhat flattened.
Cones: Pollen cones are red. Seed cones are cylindrical, 2-3” long, reddish-brown becoming brown with thin wavy irregularly toothed scales.
