At a Glance: Western columbine is a striking perennial herb with nodding flowers on a simple erect stem. Born from a taproot, it can grow to 3’ tall and is frequented by pollinators and hummingbirds when in bloom late Spring to early Summer.
Leaves: mainly basal, twice divided in 3s; blades hairless to hairy, green above, paler beneath.
Flowers: Usually 2-5 red & yellow chandeliers dangling 5 long, straight, reddish spurs w/bulbous, glandular tips, a central tuft of yellow stamens & styles protruding.
