At a Glance: Black Gooseberry (Ribes divaricatum) erect to spreading .5-2 m tall shrub, covered with numerous, small, golden prickles with larger thick spines at leaf nodes.

Leaves: Alternate, deciduous, resemble maple leaf shape, 2-5 cm wide w/5 deeply indented lobes & heart shaved base. Margins toothed, upper side dark & glossy green.

Flowers: Reddish to maroon, small, saucer-shaped, ovary glandular-hairy, in drooping clusters of 7-15.
