At a Glance: This small, shrubby tree typically reaches 1-15 m in height. It has reddish-brown or grey bark with horizontal rows of raised pores, or ‘lenticels’. It grows on forest edges and in clearings from the Straight of Georgia-Puget Sound area south to California.
Leaves: Alternate, deciduous, oblong to oval, 3-8 cm long, finely toothed, rounded at the tip, stalked, with 1 or 2 small glands at the base of the leaf blade.
Flowers: White or pinkish, 10-15 cm across, occur in elongate clusters of more than 10
Fruit: Dark purple or black cherries to 1cm diameter
