At a Glance: A member of the mallow family, Dwarf checkerbloom is native all along the pacific coast, from Washington to Baja California. It is a perennial herb that grows from a woody rhizome and is commonly found in open habitat types, reaching 60 cm at maximum height.
Leaves: Dark green and hairy, variable shapes, deeply divided into several lobes.
Flowers: Small 5-petaled pale to dark pink flowers with white veining, measuring 1-3 cm in length. Grow in inflorescences of several flowers.
Fruit: 2.5 -4 mm, deeply pitted, net-veined, short beak
Growing Conditions: Historically found in low elevation, damp meadows in western Washington. Due to habitat loss and development, it is now rare to find in these areas, with most known occurrences ranging from Baja California to Portland, OR.
