At a Glance: Short, to 65’ tall highly adaptable tree, often with crooked trunk & irregular, pillowy crown; bark moderately thick, scaly or deeply furrowed into dark brown to blackish plates.
Leaves: Deep green needles in pairs, often curved & twisted, .75-3”long
Cones: Pollen cones, small, reddish-green in clusters on tips of branches in spring; egg-shaped seed cones, 1-2” long, usually slightly curved; scales stiff & brown w/ sharp prickle at tip.
